Career / Biography
Joseph Cotten is known for his roles in the 1940's and 1950's, notably his role in the Third Man. He started his carer int he theatre but then met Orson Welles in radio anthen in his theatre. He appeared with Katharine Hepburn in the stage version of the Philadelphia Story, but did not get the film role. His first main film role was in Citizen Kane. He worked with Orson Welles again for The Magnificent Ambersons. Shadow Of A Doubt was made with Alfred Hitchcock and is one of his best performances. Journey into Fear was another Orspn Welles production. He was now very popular and was signed up by David O Selznick. He then worked with Ingrid Bergman in George Cukoor's Gaslight. This was followed by Since You Went Away with Claudette Colbert. This was also the first of several films in which he worked with Jennifer Jones including the western Duel In The Sun. In 1949 he stared in the classic filmnoir from Carol Reed, The Third Man. September Affair was a romance with Joan Fontaine. In 1953 he worked on Niagara with Marilyn Monroe. In the 1960's he was working on the stage and in films he had more supporting roles. He appeared in severl Robert Aldrich films including Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte. In his later career he appeared in a variety of different genre of films including the Japanese sci-fi Latitude Zero, though The Abominable Dr. Phibes is strange but posibley the best from this part of his career. He then worked with Charlton Heston in Soylent Green. One of his final roles was in Heaven's Gate. He was married to Patricia Medina.
