In the mid 1800's a woman (Leslie Caron) travels from France to New York to request funds from a man to help his grandson working for the French republic but the sevants in the household (Barbara Stanwyck) are also after the money. Whilst the plot is not great, there is enough there to keep the interest and good performances from Barbara Stanwyckas the scheming housekeeper and Leslie Caron as the innocent abroad. The man in the cloak is the stranger who helps Leslie Caron.
