Career / Biography

David Lean was a British film director who directed several classic British films. He was married to Kay Walsh who he divorced to marry Ann Todd as her third husband. He was one of Britiain's great film directors. He started his life as a film editor in newsreels and then feature films. He became known as the best British film editor. He gained his experience in editing British quota quickes like Ghost Camera. He worked with Noel Coward in his first four films that started with In Which We Serve. This was Noel Coward's film but in the end it was effectively directed by David Lean. This working relationship culminated in Brief Encounter one of the best British romantic films made. Celia Johnson was a muse for David Lean. After 4 films with Noel Coward he moved to Dickens. In many ways David Lean created the image of Dickens with his interpretation of Great Expectations and Oliver Twist. This showed his skill to get the best from child actors. He made three films with his third wife, Ann Todd of which The Sound Barrier was the most successful and was a quasi documentary film. Hobson's Choice was his final black and white film.
