The owner of a shoe making shop has three grown up daughters who want to marry, only he uses them as unpaid labour to run the shop. He thinks the eldest is to old to marry, but she decides to marry the man who actually makes the shoes and they set up a rival business. Charles Laughton is the dominating late 19th century father who is challenged by his intelligent eldest daughter. The film is well produced by David Lean as he balances comedy, drama and relationships. There are very good performances from the three main lead characters, Charles Laughton, John Mills and Brenda de Banzie. This was a loose reinterpretation of King Lear.
