This film documents the life of an extended lower middle class family between 1919 and 1939 and is a fascinating insight into how in the middle of the second world war, the presvious two decades were viewed from this perspective. David Lean draws out good performances from a cast of good British actors from the period, particularly from Celia Johnson, Robert Newton and Kay Walsh. Unusually for this period it was fimed in Technicolor. Although it started life as a stage play the fim does not have the feel of a play.
