Celia Johnson is known mainly for her performance as the lonely housewife in the classic British film Brief Encounter. Part of her success as an actess was her ability to be both beautiful and also down to earth and accessible to the majority female British film going audiences of the 1940's. She was a muse to dircetor David Lean. She was also ahead of her time as an actor in that she her face was often very still and used her eyes to convey emotions and she balanced the outside with the insode passions.
