Donald Siegel directed the classic 1950's Invasion Of The Body Snatchers and then went on to direct several action films, including the Clint Eastwood's cult character Dirty Harry. His development of the crime action thriller had an impact on that genre. Although born in America he attended Cambridge University and RADA in the UK. Back in America he worked for Warner Bros. His first feature film was The Verdict, in the film noir genre as were his next films. His most successful early film was Riot In Cell Block 11, notable for being filmed in an actual prison with prisoners as extras. Invasion Of The Body Snatchers was his move into Sci-Fi and what has become one of the classics of its type. In 1960 he did Flaming Star with Elvis Presley in which he got probably the best acting performance out of Elvis Presley. In 1964 he makes The Killers based on the Ernest Hemmingway story and it influenced Sam Peckinpah and Quentin Tarantino as well as introducing the smartly dressed killers into film. In the late 1960's he made a number of westerns and then the gritty police thriler Madigan that influenced later police films. Coogan's Bluff was the first of his films with Clint Eastwood. The Beguiled was a change from the cop/western to southern gothic. IN 1971 he and Cint Eastwood has a bigest hit film in Dirty Harry (Do you feel lucky?), the ultimate rouge cop movie. The Shootist had a big cast and was John Wayne's last film. His last film with Clint Eastwood was Escape From Alcatraz.
