An Arizona policeman (Clint Eastwood) is sent to New York to return a prisoner (Don Stroud) however both his assignment and New York pose a new set of challenges. He falls foul of the local police chief (Lee J Cobb), but is helped by a beautiful parole officer (Susan Clark). This was Clint Eastwood's first film with Don Siegel and marks his transition from Western hero to urban hero.
