Meryl Streep is a very successful actress, who over 30 years has given some wonderful performances in a variety of styles in films that have achieved both box office and critical acclaim. She is the mother of Grace Gummer and Mamie Gummer. She started her career on the stage in New York. Her first screen role was in Julia in 1977. THe next year she appeared in The Deerhunter, giving a strong emotional performance and had the first of her many Oscar nominations. Manhattan was her first film with a comic slant. Kramer vs Kramer was another emotinal role and a major role that gave her thefirst Oscar win. In Sophie's Choice she won the Best Actress Oscar and was the film the cemented her a major star and an excellent actor. Her role in Silkwood was apowerful drama exposing wrong doing in a nuclear power plant. Out Of Africa was a period drama set against the background of Africa. This is one of several films where Meryl Streep plays an actual person which also included Cry In The Dark and Postcards From The Edge. She then appeared in the comedy Death Becomes Her and followed that with another Oscar nomination for the CLint Eastwood film The Bridges Of Madison County, a gentle romance. Her performance in The Devil Wears Prada is one of understated power and how she calmly commands the people within all the scenes. Mamma Mia is in some ways Meryl Streep sending up Meryl Streep and giving everything in singing Abba songs. She then returned to playing real characters in Julia And Julia and The Iron Lady. In Florence Foster Jenkins she had to learn how to sing it all wrong. She has more Oscar nominations than any other actor.
