Career / Biography

Vanessa Redgrave came from a strong acting family. Her farther was Michael Redgrave and her mother was Rachel Kempson. After drama school she joined the RSC performing Shakespeare. Her first screen role was in Behind The Mask that starred her father. Her next film role was the 1966 film Morgan A Suitable Case For Treatment for which was nominated for a best actress Oscar. This was followed up by Fred Zimmerman’s successful A Man For All Seasons. Also in 1966 she starred in Blow Up that reflects the swinging 60's in London through the eyes of an Italian director. Camelot based on the Broadway musical was a much more commercial film. In 1968 she starred in the biopic Isadora for which she was nominated for a best actress Oscar. This was followed by the all star Oh! What a Lovely War. She continued playing historical characters with Mary Queen Of Scots opposite Glenda Jackson. Her next major film was the all sat Murder On The Orient Express. Julia was another Fred Zimmerman film for which she won her Oscar for best supporting actress. The Bostonians, based on a Henry James novel, was her first collaboration with Merchant and Ivory. After several British production she then teamed up again with Merchant and Ivory for Howards End for which she had an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. In a change of genre she worked alongside Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible in 1996. Films like Deep Impact and Girl Interrupted continued to show the range and depth of her ability to give very different characters life on screen. She appeared in the successful Atonement 2007 and continued to work in a range of films including the critically acclaimed Foxcatcher in 2014. She continues to work in films and has a long running role as narrator the popular television series Call The Midwife. Vanessa Redgrave is one of Britain’s greatest actresses of her generation with a major career both on the stage and in films that has spanned over 60 years.
