A young girl (Winona Ryder) is commited to a mental institution in the 1960's and develops friendships with some of the patients as she struggles to come to terms with her and their psychiactric problems. Despite the setting and theme, this is more realistic and heartfelt than some films set in mental institutions. Winona Ryder gives a good performance in the lead, but it is Angelina Jolie's performance that is the impressive performance of the film and is arguably her best performance. There is also a good and subtle performance from Vanessa Redgrave as the doctor. This gives a good feel of some of the stigma associated with mental health problems, that unfortunately not all have changed between the 1960's and today.
