Max Steiner was one of the first people to compose music for films and was regarded as the father of film scores. With his early scores, rather than just adding background music to the film his scores enhanced the dialogue and contributed to setting the atmosphere of the scene. He first used this in King Kong and was significant with Tara's theme in Gone With The Wind. During his career he wrote over 300 film scores (mainly for RKO and Warner Bros), was nominated for 25 Oscars and won 3 Oscars.
