Leslie Howard is an aspiring artist with a club foot who is told he does not have the talent to make a living as an artist so he becomes a medical student. He meets Bette Midler who is a local waitress and falls in love with her. Their relationship is stormy as she leaves and returns to him on several occasions. This is the film that made Bette Davis an international star and her first Oscar nomination. The film is based on a novel by W Somerset Maugham.
