Richard Harris was an Irish actor who started his career on the stage. He made his film debut in 1959 in Alive And Kicking and then made The Wreck Of The Mary Deare in Hollywood. He then returned to Britain for film like Guns Of Navarone and Mutiny On The Bounty. This Sporting Life was his first leading role and his first Oscar nomination. After this he appeared in the Italian film Red Desert. He then worked with Sam Peckinpah in Major Dundee. He started to get a reputation of poor behaviour and alcohol. He worked with John Huston in The Bible In The Beginning. The musical Camelot was a change of style and format for him. Whilst not a great film he works well with Vanessa Redgrave. The stage version that he produced and stared in was a financial success for him. In 1967 had a hit with McCarthur Park. The Molly Maguires was a good performance through not popular at the box office. A Man Called Horse is perhaps the film he is most well known for as the Englishman captured by the Sioux nation. After Cromwell his films in the 1970's were less popular. His career took an upturn when he was cast in The Field for which he got his second Oscar nomination. This led to a revival of his career in films like Unforgiven and Gladiator. He came to the notice of a new generation as Dumbledoor in the Harry Potter films.
