Comment
Nora Ephron was known as the writer of several very successful romantic comedies (Sleepless in Seattle, When Harry Met Sally) and for films with strong female characters. Her first marriage to the reporter who uncovered the Water gate scandal ended in divorce, but her experience became the basis of Heartburn. Her parents were also screenwriters (There's No Business Like Show Business, Carousel, Desk Set). Her early career was a journalist. Her first script was Silkwood and the first of her films with Meryl Streep. Wanting to keep more control pver her work she started directing her own scripts. It was the success of Sleepless in Seattle that made her name as a director. With You've Got Mail, she updated the 1940 film The Shop Around The Corner. A number of her films reflect life in America at the time they were made and particularly the roles of women.
