John Carpenter is a director, producer and writer known for his films in the horror genre, with some strong female characters. He is married to Sandy King, and previously married to Adrienne Barbeau. From a young age he wanted to be a film maker and studied film at university. His first full film was Dark Star which he wrote directed and produced. His next film was the violent thriller Assult On Precinct 13 and was his take on a western and is filmed at night in a claustrophobic atmosphere. It was Halloween that made his name as a horror diector and was a major influence on the genre. It is the most successful independent film made.
The Fog was another commercial success. Escape From New York was the first main film with actor Kurt Russell. The Thing was a sci-fi horror again with Kurt Russell.The was a homage to his hero director Howard Hawks. His next directed firlm was the adaptation of the Stephen King novel Christine. Starman was a return to the science fiction genre, though with a romantic element. Big Trouble In Little China is a comic adventure film again featuring Kurt Russell based on Hong Kong martial arts films. They live was a return to sci-fi horror films and is about aliens living disguised as humans. Escape from LA was the sequel to Escape from New York. Vampires and The Ghosts Of Mars were a return to a mix of science fiction and horror.
