Career / Biography

Frances McDermond is an actress who has gained critical acclaim for several of her films, particularly for playing complex female characters. She is married to the director Joel Cohen and has appeared in several of his films. Her first film role was in Blood Simple with the Coen brothers and on this film she met and later married Joel Cohen. After several television roles she appeared in the comedy Raising Arizona again by the Coen brothers and featuring Holly HUnter who she shared a house with. Missisippi Burning deals with missing civil rights workers. This gave her the first Oscar nomination. Her next major role was as the pregnant sheriff invetigating murders in Fargo and won her the Best Actress Oscar in another Coen brothers film. In Wonder Boys she plays an academic having an affair with Michael Douglas. Something's Gotta Give is Nacy Myer's comedy of older relationships. North Country is about sexual harrasment in a mine and gained her Best Supporting Oscar nomination. Burn After Reading is another comedy from the Coen brothers. Hail Caesar! is a film set in the golden age of Hollywood again from the Coen brothers. In Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri she plays a woman seeking to find the killer of her daughter and gained her the second Best Actress Oscar. Nomadland is an unusual film of a woman living out of a van and travelling across America.
