Diane Keaton's film career took off with her work with Woody Allen. She is an underrated actress and although not regularly appearing in major films, she has consistently given very good performances in a range of drama and comedy films. She has had relationships with Woody Allen, Warren Beatty and Al Pacino all of whom she worked with. Although born in California she moved to New York to study acting and has in many ways become synonymous with New York. She appeared in the original stage version of Hair. Through her stage roles she met Woody Allen. Her first film role was Lovers and Other Strangers. Francis Ford Coppola saw her in this and cast her in The Godfather and The Godfather Part II. It was then her role as Annie Hall that made her a well known actor and in many ways it has become her career defining role. It is also one of Woody Allen's best films. The film was a commercial success and she won the Best Actress Oscar for her performance. Manhattan was another collaboration with Woody Allen. Red was a serious film and was in a relationship with Warren Beatty at the time and she had an Oscar nomination for her performance. Crimes of the Heart gave her a role in dysfunctional family, which was a role she played again in later films. Baby Boom is a slightly different comedy as she is an executive who inherits a baby, comes to terms with being a parent and creates a new career. The film was a surprise commercial success. The comedy role was continued with the remake of Father Of The Bride. The strength of her performance is her calmness and her reactions to the various situations. She reunited with Woody Allen for Manhattan Murder Mystery. She had another Oscar nomination for her performance in Marvin's Room opposite Meryl Streep. First wives was another comedy and a commercial success with Bette Midler and Goldie Hawn. Something's Gotta Give is all about the relationship between Diane Keaton and Jack Nicholson as their performances fill out the script from Nancy Meyers. Hampstead is a very different style of film in what is essentially a mature romance.
