His early career where he learnt his trade was with Hal Roach Studies. His first feature film was Kentuky Rascals for RKO and was follwed by his first film with Katherine Hapeburn, Alice Adams which helped revive her career and also got Osacar nomiated for Best Picture and Best Actress. He follwoed this up with the sort of western Annie Oakley that is more about fame. His next film was Swing Time which was probably the starrt of the dance musicals of the 1930. For Quality Street he agin agin teamed up with Katherine Hepburn for an historical drama. With Ginga DIn he moved up into the big budget epic films. In Woman Of The Year he teams up Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy and sets the style for their later films. The More The Merrier is his last screwball comedy and then he was called up into the military. His first post war film was I Rember Mama.With A Place In The Sun he starts to explore post WW2 America. In 1953 he directed the classic Shane which was his first film in colour. With Giant he continues this film as he explores the American social environment of the 1950s and won Osacrs for Best Flm and Best Director. In The Diary Of Anne Frank he recreates the claustrophic atmosphere of the house. He was one of the great directors of the 1930s and 1940s
