A man avoids prison by pleading insanity and is committed to a mental institution. Once there he has to contend withth e system, the other patients and the nurse in charge of the ward. This was a popular and controversial film on its release for its portrayal of a psychiatric ward. Jack Nicholson gives one of his best performances along side Louise Fletcher as the nurse.
