Sally Field has given consistently good performances in a range of films over a number of years from her 20's through to her 60's. Arguably some of her best films were made later in her career. Her initial career was on television (Gidget, The Flying Nun). The first role in a major film was in The Way West. To escape the Flying Nun character she went to New York and the Actors Studio. After more television roles her next film was Stay Hungry. It was Smokey And The Bandit that brought her main stream success. She appeared in a couple of other films with Burt Reyolds including Hooper. It was in Norma Rae that she earned critical acclaim and also won her the first of two Best Actress Oscar wins. This moved her into a more serious role rather than the lighter comedies. In Absence of Malice she was a reporter falsely exposing Paul Newman. Kiss Me Goodbye was a whimsical film whilst Places In The Heart was a more emotional and downbeat film of a woman struggling against the odds and for which she won her second Best Actress Oscar. She then stared in a couple or romantic comedies (Murphy's Romance and Surrender). Steel Magnolias was a popular film with an all star female cast. Soapdish was a return to comedy. She then appeared in two commercially successful films, Mrs Doubtfire and Forrest Gump. In Forrest Gump she plays a character older than herself. She then went back to some television work (ER and Brothers And Sisters) before going back to films with The Amazing Spider-man. With Lincoln she was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress.
