Tom Hanks is a versatile American actor who has been a major star across a whole range of genres. He start his acting career on the stage and in some televisin roles (Bosom Buddies). His first staring role was in the television fantasy film Mazes And Monsters, but his first major film was Splash with Darryl Hannah having ben spotted by director Ron Howard. Even at this early stage of his career his comic abilities were obvious. He followed this were several other comedy films including Big which made him a star and gained him an Oscar nomination. A League Of Their Own was a more dramatic performance. His performance as the widower looking for love in Sleepless in Seattle made him a major box office draw and was a big commercial success. Philadelphia showed his ability as a dramtic actor and was a performance that won him a Oscar. Forrest Gump gave him critical acclaim and won him his second Oscar. Apollo 13 was a good solid story and performance. His versatility was shown by him voicing Toy Story. By contrast Saving Private Ryan was a different style of war film. The Green Mile is a more socially profound film. Cast Away is unusual in that Tom Hanks is largely on his own for most of the film. Terminal was another strong ramati role. In the 2010's he appeared in both romance films and dramatic films.
