Comment
James Whale started his career in the British theatre, before moving to America in the 1920's. His first major film was Frankenstein in 1931 in which he cast Boris Karloff as the monster, and his portrayal has become the defining jmage of the monster ever since. His horror films of the 1930's set the benchmark for this genre, and are notable for their combination of horror and humour, and also moving camera work. His career went into decline at the end of the 1903's. Unusually for someone of this period he was openly homosexual. After a stroke he commited suicide.
