Alan J Pakula is a director known for his conspiracy thrillers in the 1970's who managed to get the best out of some best actors. After graduating from Yale he got a job at Paramount. His first major production was To Kill A Mocking Bird in 1962 which was nominated for Best Picture. After producing a number of filsm with director Robert Mulligan his first film as a director was The Sterile Cuckoo in 1969 with Liza Minelli's first major role and an Oscar nomination. He next directed Klute which won Jane Fonda and Oscar.This had a level of realism that became part of his style of films. With the Parallax View he directed a paranoind /conspiracy thriller. This was followed up with All The Presidents Men based on the Watergate scandal. In 1979 he turn ed to comedy with Starting Over. In 1982 he wrote and directed Sophie's Choice that was a powerful character study. With See You In The Morning he returned to romance. Presumed Innocence is a strong thriller along with 1993's Pelican Brief. He died in 1998 in a car accident.
