Comment
David Lynch is an influential and surrealistic director of films that have themes of being alienated in his characters environments. His first full length film was Erasehead which was a dark vision of his early life. He followed this with the Oscar nominated Elephant Man that encompassed all the emotions associated with the story. His follow up was very different with Dino De Laurentiis wanting him to direct the big budget Dune wi thalso had major stars involved. This was not a critical or commercial success and led David Lynch away from the big budget studio productions and this led him to Blue Velvet. THis was the start of his theme of dark goings on underneath small town America. In 1990 he moved into television with Twin Peaks whcih was very successful and again exposed all the people of the town's dark secrets with a supernatural overtone. After Twin Peaks he followed this with Lost High way which has a plot even for David Lynch that is inexplicable. The Straight Story is perhaps his most accessable film of a man driving his tractor across America to meet his brother. With Mulholland Drive he goes back to the inexplicable plot but one that pulls you in and won him a Oscar nomination.
