Career / Biography

Spike Lee is a director, producer and writer. His first feature film was the independentfilm She's Gotta Have It. I t contains a character who breaks the fourt wall, a technique he used in some of his other films. It also showed black characters interacting within their own world and not in a white world. The film brought him to the attention of Hollywood. This led to School Daze, musical but commenting on the fraternitiy system in colleges and the divisions bewteen people. Do The Right Thing is a strong study onracial tensions and racial divisions. He was Oscar nominated for Best Screenplay. Mo's Better Blues was a less angry and more reflective film about being a jazz musician. Jungle Fever is a study of the tension both within and outside an interracial marriage. THe success of this led to him making Malcolm X for which he had a bigger budget. It is notable for being the first western film that was shot in Mecca, albeit with a muslim 2nd unit. It is one of the better biopics or the period. Crooklyn was very different being semi-atobiographical about his life and family in Brooklyn. Clockers is his fi0rst thriller and deals with drugs gangs. Summer of Sam was a film that he wanted to she he was not just a film maker about black Americans. Inside Man was different in that it was a thriller but also a Hollywood blockbuster rather than the more indie films. Chi-Raq is a curious film based on a Greek story where the women refuse to have sex until the war stops, but set in Chicago. In BlacKkKlansman an Afican American Fbin agent involved in inflitrating the KKK.
