Career / Biography

Kathryn Bigelow is a successful producer and director who was formerly married to the director and producer James Cameron. She directed The Hurt Locker which won her the best director Oscar, the first for a woman. The Hurt Locker also won the Best Picture Oscar and Zero Dark Thirty which was nominated for a Best Picture Oscar. She studies art, and then film. Her first film was a short film The Set-Up. Her first film was The Loveless and is an art film with the first performance from Willem Dafoe. Her next film was Near Dark which was a western vampire film and quite bloody. Blue Steel is a police thriller with a female rookie policewoman on the trail of a killer. Point Break is about bank robbers who do it to go surfing. This was her first big film and a box office success. Strange Days was a science fiction thriller and also the implications of recording every moment of our lives. The Weight of Water is a murder mystery of contemporary journalists researching an historical murder. K-19 The Widow maker was a very different style of film in what is in essence a disaster movie set on a Soviet nuclear submarine. After a break of 6 years she returned with The Hurt Locker which showed the work of a bomb disposal unit in Iraq. It is unlike any other war film and won her the Best Director Oscar. Zero Dark Thirty is the CIA's hunt for Osama Bin Laden. Detroit was set during the race riots in Detroit in 1967.
