Two men vie for the affections of an attractive woman with social ambitions. The unscrupulous one of them (Jack Carson) wins the woman (Rita Hayworth) and makes his way in the world by letting the other one (James Cagney) go to prison for a scam he was conned into. James Cagney marries Rita Hayworth's friend Olivia de Haviland, who is a feisty women's lib supporter. It is the performances from, and the interplay between, James Cagney and Olivia de Haviland that are the entertaining parts of this film. Olivia de Haviland shows some great light comic touches and this was Rita Hayworth's first major staring role.
