A young pickpocket (Vivien Leigh) who can dance is taken under the wings of a street performer (Charles Laughton) but get spotted by a socialte (Rex Harrison) who launches her career onto the stage meanwhile her mentor street performer is left behind. Made just before World War 2, it counterpoints life as a street performer with the wealthy theatre set. Although it features Vivien Leigh and Rex Harrison the film is dominated by Charles Laughton and it is his presence that makes the film. There is a good early performance from Vivien Leigh showing off her dancing and acting skills.
