During World War 2 a bomb disposal expext is brought in to work out how to diffuse bobby trapped bombs being dropped by the Germans. This is against a background of him coping with the loss of his leg and dealing with the pain through drugs and alcohol and him struggling to maintain a relationship with his girlfriend. The strength of the film is how the complex characters are played out on the screen. This film had a more down to earth reality rather than some of the fantasy films from Powell and Pressburger. It gained critical approval though was not commercially successful probably because audiences did not want a bleak pictures this soon after the war.
