A man gets a phone call from his supposedly dead friend and is introduced to a company who fakes his death, changes his appearance and gives a new life under a new identity. He starts off as a stuffy banker and becomes a painter in California. However he struggles to come to terms with his new situation and new identity. The film is shot with a lot of moving close-ups and has two big set piece scenes. The nude grape crushing scene, which was cut from the original theatrical release, and Rock Hudson getting drunk at his own party. The film had a poor reception with critics and at the box office. Though later did become something of a cult film.
