A man of dubious parentage sets out to avenge the killing of his friend in pre-revolution France. The plot makes little sense and is a bit of a mess, but then this is all about sword fights, comedy and romance. The final sword fight between Stewart Granger and Mel Ferrer is reputed to be the longest on film at over 6 minutes which is impressive. Stewart Granger hides out in a travelling troupe of comedy players as Scaramouche where he has an affair with Eleanor Parker whilst fighting feeling for the elegant Eleanor Parker who he thinks is his sister. The film has all sorts of faults, but taken at face value is entertaining.
