Comment/Synopsis

Moira Shearer is a ballet dancer who is torn between the man who is building her career and the man she loves. This was a very expensive production from Powell and Pressburger. It is notable for how it weaves the music into movement and the creative use of differnt camera angles. Powell and Pressburger insisted that the lead role must be someone who is a real ballerina and not an actor. The novel part of the film is the 15 minute sequence of the ballet that plays out the story fairy tale of The Red Shoes but more from the perspective of the dancer. The film was made as an art film rather than for commercial reasons though it did go on to be a major success.
