A clerk who wants to be a poet becomes in fatuated with a woman and is conned into borrowing money to impress herand then his life spirals out of control. Things get worse thanks to the owrk of his sister who becomes a prostitute an her boyfriend. This is a moral tale from German director F W Murnau that has a convolute plot but has some innovative photography and scene set ups.
