This is a wonderful and entertaining gentle comedy of an English bookshop owner (Hugh Grant) who accidentaly meets and falls in love with a famous American actress (Julia Roberts). It is a well written study, by Richard Curtis, in how normality meets fame and also how other people respond to it. This is an excellent example of British romantic comedy thanks in no small way to the script by Richard Curtis. There is a slight nod to films like Roman Holiday in which Julia Roberts almost plays a verion of herself. In many ways the roamnce works because tey do not chnage their characters. This is shown by the scene where Julia Roberts says I'm also just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love he when she was was wearing her own clothers rather than costume. It is also one of the great romantic lines in cinema.
