A scientist (James Stewart) comes up with a theory that the tail will fall off a new plane after a given number of hours. When one the planes crashes, he is sent out to investigate, but the plane he is sent on, has reached that number of hours and he tells the crew (Janette Scott) and a famous actress (Marlene Dietrich) that it is about to crash. This is very wordy and worthy, with James Stewart as the scientist with limited social skills up aganst commercial interests. The film is based on the novel by Nevil Shute.
