An American man (Kevin Kline) inherits an appartment in Paris, but to his surprise he cannot sell it as an elderly woman (Maggie Smith) and her daughter (Kristin Scott Thomas) can live their for the life of the old woman and he has to pay her rent as well. As he starts to get to know the two women he finds out more about his family and his father who left him the appartment. There are solid performances from the three lead characters, particularly Kristin Scott Thomas, but the main problem with the film is that the plot is just dragged out.
