Comment/Synopsis
During the depression of the 1920's a spoilt young socialite woman meets a man living on the city rubbish dump as part of game. On a whim she offers him the job as butler in the family home. He is not quite what he seems to be and the family has little connection with reality. This is a good version of the wealthy person living as a poor person to understand what is important in life and is also a social comment of the difference between the idle rich and and the struggling workers of the period, which is typical of the screwball comedy genre of films. The plot has been reused many times since, though oftern without the humour and style of this version. Carole Lombard is very good in the lead role as the scatty socialite well supported by William Powell as the butler and Alice Brady as her overbearing and jealous sister. This film is unusual in that it was nominated for best actor and actress as well as best supporting actor and actress, but won none of them.
