A man (Monte Beragon) is shot dead and his wife (Joan Crawford) is suspected. In a flash back the events leading up to this are told. When her husband (Bruce Bennett) leaves her for another woman, she has to get a job in order to support her daughter's (Ann Blyhth) aspirational life style. She gets a job as a waitress and then starts her own successful business. However her life, relationship and business get increasing complex as she tries to give her daughter everything, but the daughter just wants more. Joan crawford is good as the mother whose life is driver by trying to give her daughter everything. The heart of the film though is the character and especially the performance of Ann Blyth as the spoilt teenager who despises her mother and her mother's attempts to better her. There is good support from Eve Arden in the supporting role as the restaurant manager. In many ways this was Joan Crawford's most significant role and rightly won her a Best Actress Oscar.
