The elderly door man at an expensive hotel is down graded to wash-room attendant and looses his self esteem and the respect of his neighbours. This does not have a complex plot but is a an examination of the emotional and social conseuqnces of a man loosing his job when his job defines everything about and his life. There is a very good performance from Emil Jannings and some very good direction and camera shots from director F W Murnau. The film uses a variety of creative camera shots using unchained camera that keeps the focus on the characters and also produces movement of the camera as the scene develops. It ia also notable for having no intertitles as F W Murnau thought they were distracting. Worth watching for the early examples of creative camera work.
