James Mason leads a group of explorers including his nephew (Pat Boon), the widow of a previous explorer (Arlene Dahl) and local guide (Peter Ronson) down an Icelandic volcano and battles with monsters to get to the centre of the earth. Meanwhile the nephew's fiance (Diane Baker) is left at home waiting for him. This is a good version of the book by Jules Verne and much better than the more recent versions, helped by good performances James Mason and the other lead characteers and some convincing special effects given when the film was made.
