A mixed group of people are quanantinied on a Greek island due to the plague. Fear mounts as people die and there is suspicion that one of them is the evil vorvolaka. Boris Karloff gives a dark brooding performance as the military general with a history of hrashness and lack of compassion. There is good support from Ellen Drew who may or may not be a source of evil. Val Lewton's production in black and white gives the film a dark sense of foreboding. The idea for the film was in part inspiried by the painting Isle of the Dead by Arnold Böcklin.
