The bell ringer Quasimodo (Anthony Hopkins) falls in love with the gypsy dancer Esmeralda (Lesley-Anne Down) , but she is in love with another man and another man is in love with her. This is a solid but somewhat unadventurous British version of the novel. Derek Jacobi is good as the monk torn between love and his vows, but it s Lesley-Anne Down as the sensual gypsy dancer that is the highlight of the film.
