A idealistic American volunteers as an ambulance driver in the Italian alps during world war 1 and falls in love with a British nurse in this very long adaptations of the Ernest Hemingway novel. The film is fine in many ways, but the performances from Roack Hudson and Jennifer Jones are not their best nor is this one of Selznick's better films. It has the reputation of being a film made for Jennifer Jones to star in as she was Selznick's wife. The dialogue is decidedly stilted in places and there is no real sense of love and romance between Rock Hudson and Jennifer Jones.
