Paul Newman is an ageing pool hustler who takes a younger player (Tom Cruise) and his girl friend (Mary Mastrantonio) under his wing. Each of the characters is looking for something different from the deal and tensions develop. Tom Cruise learnt to play pool for the film and made most of the shots himself.
