The son of a rural farmer goes to the city to sell their wheat and whilst there falls in love with and marries a waitress, but when he takes her home she is rejected by his father and has unwelcome attention from the farm hands. The plot is nothing special as the outsider comes into a family and challenges love and family ties. However what makes this film is the production and cinematography from F W Murnau as he mixes the long shots and details of the harvest, with emotional family interactions and the romantic chemistry between Charles Farrell and Mary Duncan. F W Murnau insisted this was filmed as a silent film despite talkie films becoming normal as his style produced a film that was one of the highlights of silent films and has styles from his background in German Expressionism.
