A woman with a dark past is employed as a nanny to a spirited and argumentative girl in a dysfunctional family. As her past gradually comes to light the daughter slowly comes to terms with her past, her relationship and the importance of truth. Whilst the central charcter is Deborah Kerr as the nanny, much of the film revolves around the character played with passion by Hayley Mills. It was though the performance from Edith Evans as the grandmother failing to come to terms with attitiudes and decisions of her daughter that won the Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
