Comment/Synopsis

Robert Mitchum takes over Humphrey Bogart's role in the earlier film as private eye Philip Marlow in this complex thriller which is set in England this time rather than the USA. This version is stilted and lacks the atmosphere of the earlier version despite having a strong cast, but the plot and acting still make it worth watching. The film is based on the novel by Raymond Chandler.
