Daniel Day Lewis started his career on the British stage and then appeared in several critically acclaimed films whilst still continuing to work on stage. He is the only man to have won Oscars for best actor three times. He is married to Rebecca Miller, the daughter of author Arthur Miller who he met in preparing for The Crucible. His first film role in a main film was a small part in Gandhi. This was followed by a role in The Bounty. His first major role was in My Beautiful Laundrette which was his break out role. His next film was the historical drama A Room With A View. He won his first best actor nomination for My Left Foot. It was for this film that we started his approach as an extream for of method acting were he completly became the character and stayed in the character throughout filming. The Last Of Mohicans was another historical epic. He worked with director Martin Scorsese in a version of The Age Of Innocence. In The Name Of The Father was another film based in Ireland and based on a true story. He returned after a 3 year break to historical drama with an adaptation of The Crucible. For the Boxer, he spent 2 years leaning how to box. After a 5 year break he returned in Matin Scorsese's Gangs Of New York for which he got an Oscar nomination. His most critically acclaimed performance was in There Will Be Blood and his second Best Actor Oscar win. In a change of style he appeared in the musical Nine. His third Oscar Best Actor win came for his performance in Lincoln. He was the first actor to win 3 Best Actor Oscar's. AFter making Phantom Thread, he decied to retire from film making.
