Ridley Scott has directed some classic films, notably Alien and Blade Runner as well as a number of other good films. After college he worked for the BBC and then directing advertiments. He set up a commercial company to make these including the Hovis advert of the boy on the bike. His first feature film as a director was the Duellists which had David Puttman as the producer. His second film is the classic and influencial film Alien which is as much horror as sci-fi. His next film was Blade Runner in which he created a wonderfully dark, damp and atmospheric dystopian world in which he asks what does it mean to be human. Black Rain in which two American policemen are in Japan has echoes of BLade Runner, with the rain and cityscapes. THelma and Louise was a very different film being set in the sun and desert and about two headstrong women, but it did give him his first nomination for best director. His second nomination was for the historical epic Gladiator which he tried to get as historically accurate as possible. Black Hawk Down is a war film of a failed American attempt to capture a war lord. Kingdom of Heaven is about war, God and the rights and wrongs of the crusades. For Prometheus he returned to the Alien theme with this as a sort of prequel. The Martian is a sort of upbeat Robinson Crusoe story of a man surviving having been accidentally left on Mars. This has humour and less CGI effects.
